CourseGraphic Find out about the profession of medical insurance billing and coding, and the Westside Extension certificate program in this free information session. Topics to be covered include: structure of our program, the types of jobs available in the health care field, networking, certification, and equipment and books that you will need.

Healthcare is one of the most job-secure fields of the next few decades and knowledge of coding and billing can open lots of doors. Our certificate program will give you basic foundational knowledge and skills, an understanding of the types of jobs the knowledge applies to, and the variety of career paths.  The program consists of 10 required classes, totaling more than 80 hours of class time, plus plenty of at-home and online practice. Developed by professionals in the field, it can be completed in about six months. Participation in the Certificate Program is not required. Individual classes may be taken as long as you meet prerequisites. However, only students who successfully complete all required classes will earn our certificate.
 
All potential participants in the program should attend. You may register for classes immediately following this information session. Attend this FREE information session to learn more about the field and our program and meet some of our instructors.

Texts and necessary manuals are NOT included in the class fees. Some required books may be purchased in our campus bookstore; all are available online. Expect to spend approximately $500-$800 (depending on choices) for these books which provide up-to-date information and are used throughout the program. 10 Required Courses for the Program Certificate
2 Cohorts Per Year: Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter


The first 5 courses are offered Fall 2018:

1. Health Insurance & Managed Care, Part 1
This class reviews the basic key concepts of insurance and managed care carriers including Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and recent changes impacting our  health system due to health care reform.  It prepares the student for understanding the many different types of insurance plans and how they work.

2. Body Systems & Terminology for Coders & Billers
Designed specifically for coders and billers, this course teaches you to decipher terminology by root words as well as about anatomy and physiology, since that’s how coders code and billers bill. Plus a strong medical vocabulary is the foundation of any healthcare career!

3. ICD-10 Coding
Learn about diagnosis coding related to reimbursement. Understand the principles used to transform verbal diagnoses and surgical procedures into numerical codes; learn about the use and format of the ICD manual.  Prerequisite: Body Systems & Terminology.

4. CPT (HCPCS) Coding
Get an introduction to CPT (procedural) descriptive terms and identifying codes currently being used in the field of medicine. You’ll get instruction in the use and format of the CPT manual. Prerequisite: Body Systems & Terminology.

5. Claims Processing
Learn medical billing techniques and how to follow up and collect on billed claims. You will also learn how to complete medical and itemized statements. Various types of insurance plans and insurance cards will also be reviewed.


The last 5 courses are offered Winter 2019:

6. Computer Billing, Part 1
Covers billing forms in more detail, including entering charges, modifiers, posting payments, appealing denials and minimizing receivables. Learn about the most popular insurance plans and get tips for working on various medical software programs and avoiding common mistakes. Prerequisites: Body Systems & Terminology, ICD Coding, and CPT Coding.

7. Computer Billing, Part 2
Get familiar with billing forms in greater detail including entering charges, modifiers, posting payments, appealing denials and minimizing receivables. Learn about the most popular insurance plans and get tips for working on various medical software programs and avoiding common mistakes. Prerequisites: Computer Billing, Part 1.

8. Health Insurance & Managed Care, Part 2
Instructors choose current relevant topics to help make students more knowledgeable and employable. Topics may vary from session to session, so students may repeat this class to gain additional knowledge. Topics may include dental, home health or domiciliary (medicare) coding or workers' comp lien processing.

9. Advanced Coding
Get acquainted with medical chart analysis and HIM chart abstracting. Find out about Medicare reimbursement compliance and how Medicare Prospective Payment Systems (PPS) impact hospital and physician reimbursement. Practice coding from a variety of report types, including professional services reports, surgical reports, and interventional inpatient progress reports that include physical therapy, pharmacology, diagnostic injections and infusions with administration coding guidelines. Prerequisites: ICD, CPT Coding, and familiarity with computer keyboard.

10. Hospital Billing
Hospitals hire the majority of billers, pay well, and have great training and advancement opportunities. This class acquaints you with billing for hospitals and outpatient surgery centers. Learn federal requirements for understanding reimbursement including ancillary care, outpatient and inpatient surgery, and emergency billing. Also get an overview of the accounts receivable process including revenue cycle. Evaluate the CMS-1450 (UB-04) billing form and the collection process by understanding payer guidelines. Find out how the Department of Health and Human Services, including CMS, impacts hospital revenue. Prerequisites:  Computer Billing, Part 1 & 2.
